Job Description:

Reporting to the Vice President Finance and CFO, the Director, Finance is responsible for financial planning and analysis, financial modeling, capital budgeting, and organizational performance reporting. The role requires a strong collaborative and experienced leader who has the courage to think differently and who can cultivate partnerships for positive change. The Director Finance is an important member of the management team, responsible for providing leadership and direction on management issues, as well as day-to-day management of the finance functions for the organization. Functions reporting to the Director include business analysis, case costing, treasury and general accounting, payroll, accounts payable and accounts receivable.
  • University Degree from a recognized university
  • Chartered Professional Accountant Designation (Canadian)
  • Knowledge of Not for Profit Accounting Guidelines (GAAP) preferred
  • Knowledge of Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) charitable regulations preferred
  • Strong business acumen with solid experience in business management, financial planning, performance measurement and budgeting functions
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills with the ability to identify trends, establish benchmarks, as well as provide credible analysis and business recommendations
  • High emotional intelligence with excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to articulate complex financial issues to a broad audience
  • Ability to work and thrive in a changing environment while experiencing financial constraints
  • Evidence of a collaborative leadership style with effective team building skills
  • Excellent decision making skills with the ability to form and defend independent judgment with the ability to influence others and outcomes
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to effectively handle a large number of issues simultaneously
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently under pressure/stressful conditions
  • Must be change orientated and possess an attitude of continuous improvement
  • Minimum 5 years financial leadership at the management level
  • Intermediate computer skills (Excel/PowerPoint/Word)
  • Evidence of satisfactory attendance record
  • An employee’s disciplinary record will be reviewed as part of the assessment of qualifications preferred
  • Previous related management and/or leadership experience within a healthcare setting would be an asset preferred
  • Knowledgable of Health Based Allocation Method and other Ministry funding preferred
  • Knowledgable of case costing preferred
  • Experienced with IBM TM1 and Cognos applications preferred
  • Evidence of satisfactory attendance record

  • Should be aware of conditions and measures that may affect the safety of patients, residents, students, employees, volunteers, physicians and visitors
  • Leading annual and multi-year operating and capital budgeting processes while providing practical strategic advice that supports the hospital in achieving its financial goals and objectives.
  • Leading detailed monthly, quarterly and annual reporting, monitoring and forecasting of the hospital's financial position. This includes developing and implementing appropriate analytical tools for reviewing financial and statistical information to enable effective decision making.
  • Leading the hospital's planning and execution of work related to internal and external audits.
  • Monitoring compliance and producing all required attestations and similar compliance declarations. Mitigates risk by ensuring compliance with regulatory agencies, audit, legal, tax, etc.  Ensures that all remittances, including HST and other government requirements, are current
  • Forecasting and managing cash flow, including receivables and payables management. This includes appropriate investment of excess cash, management of credit facilities and regular reporting on short and long term cash flow forecasts.
  • Contributing financial expertise and analysis in support of innovative approaches to health system funding reform, models of care, and analytics.
  • Working with the Vice President, Finance and CFO, consult, identify and execute on opportunities to maximize on all revenue sources.
  • Managing the financial records and reporting for all capital projects, including budget review and cash flow planning.
  • Focusing on quality improvement through ongoing monitoring and implementation of initiatives and remedies to provide high quality financial services to all stakeholders. Implementing operational best practices.
  • Regularly presenting to hospital senior leadership and Board Committees on matters related to the financial health of the hospital.
  • Directing and monitoring policies and procedures related to financial management within the hospital. Oversees and is responsible for the financial processes/policies and internal controls of financial reporting systems, control of assets, and expenditure controls, as well as ensuring compliance with legislative requirements, MIS reporting, and Broader Public Sector directives.
  • Managing key professional relationships for the organization including but not limited to: insurance, benefit providers, auditors, and retail vendors.
